Anxiety Attacks and Disorder in Children
Most of us are familiar with the anxiety attacks
that happen in adults and many of the mental and physical problems
that occur as a result. What far too many of us tend to overlook,
however, is the possibility that our children may also be if suffering
from the same maladies. As a matter of fact, anxiety attacks children
and are often just as severe and unexpected as those that are experienced
by adults. Being able to recognize these problems in children is
one of the first steps in helping them to cope with the difficulties
and to avoid a lifetime of problems.
One of the largest problems with anxiety attacks
children experience is the fact that they are not capable of expressing
their thoughts to us during that time. That is one of the reasons
why these anxiety attacks are often overlooked and at times, are
treated in a very wrong way. Just as an adult can have physical
feelings, such as a tightness in the chest or shortness of breath
whenever they are experiencing an anxiety attack, a child can have
the same problems. The real difficulty is that they may be treated
for these physical maladies whenever there is actually nothing wrong.
The most important thing is for the adult in the
child's life to be ready to deal with anxiety if it should happen
to crop up. Even though you hope that the anxiety attacks children
have never affect your own child, it is a real possibility and the
only way for you to be able to protect your child is to be ready
for that problem. Some of the symptoms that the child may experience
whenever they are having an anxiety attack would include nausea,
a tightness in the chest, dizziness, difficulty in breathing and
sweating. There is also a general feeling of uneasiness and anxiety
that goes along with these attacks. Recognizing these things whenever
a child is young helps them to be able to cope with the problems
early in life.
There are also a number of different types of
anxiety attacks children can manifest as well. These would not only
include the typical panic attacks, such as the ones that adults
have but it could also show up in an excessive compulsive disorder.
Children are also prone to experience problems with posttraumatic
stress disorder, a condition that is often only attributed to severe
trauma that is experienced by adults.
There are a number of different things that you
can do in order to help children to overcome the anxiety attacks
that they are experiencing. Psychological help may be necessary
but it can also do a world of good if your child is exposed to coping
mechanisms that may be able to help them to overcome the anxiety
or to avoid it altogether. Many of these are the same as what adults
use in order to overcome their anxiety attacks, and they do so effectively.
By your taking an active role in helping your child with their disorder,
you will be doing them a favor that will last for the rest of their
lives.
